Mr Marwan Ghabra -
Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Innovator & Educator
London's Leading Keratoconus Specialist
Mr Marwan Ghabra is a distinguished ophthalmic surgeon whose career spans more than four decades of clinical practice, surgical innovation, and institutional leadership.
Trained in the United Kingdom, Mr Ghabra began his consultant career at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, one of Europe’s leading ophthalmic centres. During this formative period, he gained expertise in anterior-segment microsurgery, refractive correction, corneal transplantation, and the then-emerging field of phacoemulsification cataract extraction—a minimally invasive method that was revolutionising visual rehabilitation worldwide.
In 1998, following his tenure in London, Mr Ghabra returned to Syria, where he made a historic contribution by becoming the first surgeon to introduce phacoemulsification cataract surgery in the country. At that time, most cataract procedures were performed using extracapsular extraction, which involved large incisions, prolonged recovery, and greater surgical risk. By introducing ultrasonic phacoemulsification, he transformed national standards of cataract care, enabling safer operations, faster recovery, and superior optical results.
Recognising the need for sustainable access to modern ophthalmic services, he went on to establish the largest private eye-hospital group in Syria. This network offered comprehensive subspecialty services—including corneal, refractive, glaucoma, retinal, and paediatric ophthalmology—supported by dedicated training and research divisions. The institutions under his direction became regional centres of excellence, attracting both domestic and international patients while training the next generation of ophthalmic surgeons.
Mr Ghabra’s influence extends far beyond his surgical accomplishments. He has consistently championed education, technology transfer, and international collaboration, maintaining active links with universities and research organisations in the UK and Europe. His commitment to mentoring young ophthalmologists has helped embed the highest global standards of safety, precision, and ethical practice throughout the Middle East.
Known for his meticulous technique and patient-centred approach, Mr Ghabra has performed tens of thousands of cataract, refractive, and corneal procedures, achieving outcomes recognised for both safety and precision. His enduring goal has been to bridge the gap between clinical practice, research innovation, and education, ensuring that every advancement in science translates into better sight for patients.
Today, Mr Ghabra continues his work in the UK and internationally through ongoing research, development, and education programmes—linking surgical innovation with translational science to improve global standards of eye care.

Research & Innovation Contributions
Intra-Corneal Implant Development for Keratoconus
As co-founder of MAG Optics (2013), Mr Ghabra led the design of novel intra-corneal implants for keratoconus and corneal ectasia.
The project advanced the understanding of corneal biomechanics and optical remodelling, ultimately earning selection into the Johnson & Johnson J Labs Accelerator in the USA—reflecting recognition of its scientific and clinical potential
The Ghabra Technique
In collaboration with Gebauer Meditech (Germany), Mr Ghabra led the original conceptual development and subsequent clinical refinement of what became known as the Ghabra Technique—a femtosecond laser–assisted method for implanting Xenia® collagen lenticules within the corneal stroma.
The technique enables deep corneal implantation, allowing posterior corneal irregularities to be addressed while preserving native tissue and, in selected cases, avoiding the need for corneal transplantation.
The Ghabra Technique is now recognised internationally as a tissue-preserving surgical option within contemporary keratoconus management.
Refractive & Cataract Lens Innovation
Mr Ghabra pioneered the “mix-and-match” intra-ocular lens (IOL) strategy, combining monofocal, extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF), and multifocal IOLs to deliver high-quality vision across all distances.
This personalised approach minimises optical side-effects such as glare or halos while maximising contrast and visual clarity—offering true spectacle independence for cataract and refractive-lens-exchange patients.
Corneal & Optical Research
His research into anterior and posterior corneal aberrations in keratoconus, as well as the biomechanical behaviour of collagen-based implants, has contributed to contemporary approaches in refractive planning and diagnostics.
This work reflects a consistent focus on linking laboratory research with practical clinical decision-making.
Across four decades, Mr Marwan Ghabra has worked across clinical practice, education, and innovation, contributing to the development of ophthalmic services in the UK, the Middle East, and internationally. His work has focused on improving access to advanced eye surgery, supporting the training of future specialists, and encouraging the careful adoption of new technologies in clinical practice.
His career has included the early introduction of phacoemulsification in Syria, the establishment of specialist eye centres, and ongoing research in corneal and refractive surgery. Throughout, his focus has remained on delivering safe, evidence-based care and advancing standards in patient outcomes.
